Speaking and Teaching

I teach my Top Study Secrets to high school students. I have been honoured to be a guest presenter for 5 years now at the NSW Hunter Central Coast's High Achievers (Gifted and Talented Students - GATS) Camp. This is organised by the wonderful teachers from the region's local government schools as an initiative to encourage their schools' highest achieving students and equip them to perform at their best in Year 12 and in the HSC.

I also have the privilege of speaking at high schools and teaching group of students, especially those in Years 10, 11 & 12, the study methods and techniques I used to do well in my HSC and achieve a UAI (as the ATAR used to be called) of 99.90.

The teachers at these schools do a wonderful job, and they've said to me that sometimes it takes an 'outsider' to say things about study skills and studying for the students to sit up and listen, because sometimes they are just so familiar with hearing it from their teachers. (It is a good thing that students feel familiar with their teachers, but sometimes students need to hear it from someone different to get them into action!)

I have presented to various groups of Year 9 to 12 students ranging in size from 15 students to 175 students. I find a series of 45 minute to 1 hour workshops with different small groups of up to about 20 students of similar ability generally works best, but I am happy to do whatever works best for each school and its students. I have done these workshops with both ATAR and non-ATAR students, and tailor the workshops to suit the different groups. My favourite groups are those who want to be there, regardless of what their marks say of their performance in exams so far or whether they want an ATAR or not.

I love to see students in these sessions pick up tips and ideas to use in their study. What stands out to each student is different because people study in different ways. I cover a diverse range of study methods so everyone can take away some useful techniques that suit their style of study.

I have also had the great privilege of speaking at staff meetings about what qualities in my teachers helped me to do well in my HSC, and to parents of HSC students about how they can best support their child as they prepare for the HSC.
